Turtles
The first turtles appeared about 215 million years ago at the end of the Triassic Period.
Turtles are part of a group called anapsids which first early in the Permian Period ((286 to 248 million years ago). They reached their greatest diversity about 260 million years ago. Most types were wiped out in the "great extinction" at the end of the Permian Period (248 million years ago). Only turtles survived the Triassic Period (248 to 213 million years ago).
There are over 200 species of turtles living today.
