Ancient Species -
Cycads

Cycads are a group of seed plants with a stout trunk and a crown of large compound leaves.

Cycads first appeared about 300 million years ago during the Carboniferous Period. They became prolific during the Triassic and Jurassic Periods (248 to 144 million years ago) when they comprised one fifth of all plants. Since that time the number of species have diminished to a handful - most of which are in danger of extinction. The species still living today include the "sago palm" (which is not a palm).

Fossil stems, leaves, cones and seeds of cycads have been found all over the world.
