Ancient Species -
Birds

Bird fossils are not common because of their light, hollow bones.

The earliest known birds are dinosaur-like animals from the Jurassic Period (213 to 144 million years ago). Birds rapidly diversified through the Cretaceous Period (144 to 66.4 million years ago) with ancestors of ducks, geese, albatrosses, gulls and other well-known birds appearing during that time.

Birds continued to diversify through the Cenozoic Era with most modern bird orders having appeared by about 35 million years ago during the Oligocene Period.
