Ancient Species

Mammals

The first mammals appeared in Central Asia late in the Cretaceous Period (144 to 66.4 million years ago). Following the "great extinction" which wiped out the dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous Period, mammals became the dominant land vertebrates. By the start of the Eocene Period (about 58 million years ago) most modern groups had become established.
